| Because Nature's Sunshine Essential oils are so concentrated, most of them need to be diluted in oil, lotion, water, salts or some other carrier before they are applied to the skin. Carriers prevent the essential oils from quickly evaporating, protect the skin and make blending essential oils easy. There are only two exceptions to rule. The first is that it is okay to put most essential oils on the soles of your feet undiluted (be careful with cinnamon and clove). The second is that lavender can be used undiluted on the skin. Be aware that using too many drops of essential oils in bath or lotion products can cause skin irritation. Be careful with essential oils with a safety rating of 4 (irritating in the bath) or 5 (high irritant). Specifically, clove, cinnamon, and oregano will irritate the skin if not properly diluted and must be used with extreme caution in bath products. Pine, pepermint and the citrus oils can burn skin in the bath if too many drops are used in bath water. Mixing these oils into salt, honey, castile soap or sunshine Concentrate before the bath will greatly reduce the chance of skin irritation. Citrus oils increase photsensitivity of the skin and should not be applied before sunbathing or prolonged exposure. Avoid strong sunlight or sun beds after topically applying essential oils. Always test essential oils on a small patch of skin to determine your skin's sensitivity. Keep all essential oils out of the reach of children. Large amounts of essential oils taken orally can be dangerous or even fatal. Avoid exposure to the eyes and sensitive skin areas. In the case of contact, flush with milk, a carrier oil or vegetable oil. (Essential oils are not water soluble and water may worsen the irritation.) Store essential oils away from heat, light, dampness and electromagnetic frequencies. If pregnant, terminally ill or undergoing drug therapy, consult your physician before using essential oils. Use essential oils during pregnancy, only if you are working with a qualified aromatherapist, and then only use the gentlest oils in very diluted concentrations (one percent or less). Some oils may nauseat or stimulate the uterus of a pregnant woman. Contraindications can be found after each essential oil description in Aromatherapy for Body, Mind and Spirit or in the chart found on the Matching Essential Oils with Herbs brochure. Take a periodic break from using essential oils. Use oils for six days and then rest for a day, or use oils for three weeks and then rest a week. If taking homeopathic remedies wait an hour before and after using essential oils. Flower remedies may be used with essential oils at any time. More Information on Aromatherapy - Click Here |
